Our early beginnings began over fifty years ago when in 1968 a young pastor and his family sensed God’s call for them to gather a small group of people in their home to pray together, study the Bible, share meals, resources and respond to needs within the community while building healthy relationships focused on Jesus. In a short period time this small group outgrew the pastor’s home and rented space at St. Peter’s Lodge in downtown New Milford where they were able to provide additional rooms for a worship service, Sunday school and various children’s programs as they continued to grow and engage the community of New Milford and surrounding areas with the Gospel. Over the next couple of years the church experienced tremendous growth in many ways as God was doing wonderful things and stretching their faith to explore property suitable to build a new church facility that would serve the church body and the community with even greater impact for the cause of Christ.
In 1970 on Easter Sunday, the young and growing church held a Sunrise Service on a piece of property on Old Park Lane Road that did not yet belong to them but believed would soon be the new house that God would build to reach the lost in the area. That exciting Easter Sunday along with much prayer, daring faith and perseverance launched the church forward as they were no longer trespassing but miraculously purchased the property that soon followed more God-sized encounters of His provision and blessing both physically and spiritually as the Spirit led them onward.
On October 7, 1972, the new church facility was completed and dedicated to the Lord in a celebration service giving all the glory to God for all that He had done and continues to do. The church continued to engage the community in various ways in hosting numerous outreach events, Summer Vacation Bible Schools, special holiday programs and opening Little People Nursery School that reached and served hundreds of young families in the New England area.
Over the next few decades the church experienced what many churches go through as God continued to direct their steps through changes and transitions in ministries and leadership. They encountered mountaintop wins and valley-like woes while all along trusting in God’s care and calling to reach the lost with the message of Hope in New Milford and surrounding Litchfield County. Through it all the church remained strong, surviving the storms and better positioning them to now thrive moving forward with new God-given vision in new and creative ways “to GO” and engage their community led by the power of the His Spirit toward extraordinary days ahead!
Fast forward to 2017 where God’s new vision for His church would surface as a transition in the lead pastoral role would pass from one admired and well respected pastor leading this great church over 30 years to a new pastor and his young family with great courage and calling to lead the charge in the “new things” God is doing and has destined for His glory at New Milford Assembly.
We invite you to join us on this daring faith adventure as we grow together in Christ and live it out loud where His power prevails and His love endures. Let’s “GO”!
“Behold, I am doing a new thing; now it springs forth, do you not perceive it? I will make a way in the wilderness and rivers in the desert.”
